Even in a small, two-person group, these meetings have proven to be invaluable. They create dedicated time each week to review ongoing projects, strategize for the days ahead, and ensure alignment—ultimately driving faster progress toward our goals.
My approach to 1:1 meetings is simple yet effective. I use a Google Sheet template that one team member fills out before the meeting. To keep things fresh and collaborative, we alternate who leads each week. This ensures that everyone’s perspectives, ideas, and talking points are heard, fostering open and productive discussions.
Here’s how we structure these check-ins to maximize their impact:
1. Follow-Up From Last Meeting
We start by reviewing highlights from the previous check-in. This helps assess progress and identify any outstanding tasks that need attention.
2. New Topics for Discussion
Next, we dive into fresh topics for the week. These points are carried forward for follow-up in the next meeting, ensuring a continuous flow of momentum.
3. Celebrating Wins
Recognizing accomplishments is essential, especially in fast-paced or challenging environments. Each week, we list at least five wins—big or small—to acknowledge our progress and keep morale high.
4. Action Items
To ensure accountability, we wrap up by outlining specific tasks for the team to complete before the next check-in.
5. Open Floor
Finally, we dedicate time for feedback, concerns, or ideas. This open dialogue ensures everyone feels heard and engaged.
